Two-minute beach clean in Chapel Porth Cornwall

- BY VICKY LISSAMAN

Take a cliff-top walk along the coast path to St Agnes Head via derelict mine buildings at Wheal Coates, then on to the beach at Chapel Porth to do your own two-minute beach clean. Such a simple task at the end of a blustery coastal walk, but it’s not just the environment that benefits. Your own wellbeing will, too, with an overriding sense of having done your bit. ■■#■2minutebeachclean, beachclean.net nationaltrust.org.uk/chapel-porth

Crocodile Dundee

The smooth knife-wielding, buffalotaming ways of bushman Mick Dundee shone a spotlight on a land Down Under in the romcom Crocodile Dundee.

Hitting the big screen almost 35 years ago, the film lead to the biggest revolution in Australian tourism since the arrival of the jumbo jet in the 1970s.

The story starts when American journalist Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) travels to Kakadu in the Northern Territory in search of a bushman reported to have lost half a leg to a saltwater crocodile.

When Mick (Paul Hogan) decides to show Sue “his” country, the audience gets to see the spectacular Kakadu scenery.

Ubirr is the rock formation in Kakadu National Park where Mick climbs to the top, points towards the horizon, and declares: “This is my backyard and over there is the Never Never,” as the camera pans across the flood plains.

Heading further into the bush, Mick and Sue are stopped by a water buffalo that refuses to budge. Mick solves the impasse by hypnotising the animal and “Charlie the Buffalo” is now immortalised at the Adelaide River Resort where he’s stuffed and standing on the bar!

Gunlom Gorge (Echo Pool in the film), is where Mick spears a fish and cooks bush tucker. Then, after surviving a crocodile attack (although crocodiles aren’t actually found in these waters) Mick and Sue swim in the spectacular Gunlom rock pool, now a tourist hotspot in Kakadu.

Through their Aussie adventures, Sue becomes so enthralled with Mick she takes him back to New York where he is amazed by the wonders of city life.
