Ings hints that Kop is calling
SOUTHAMPTON striker Danny Ings has hinted he wants to play for Liverpool again – to savour Anfield’s crazy Champions League atmosphere.
There have been rumours that Ings, who left Merseyside in the summer of 2019 after an injuryplagued spell, could be set for a return to Anfield
He has not yet signed a new contract at St Mary’s and reportedly wants to play Champions League football. Ings, who was restricted to just 14 appearances for Liverpool, said his favourite nights were at “Anfield on Champions League night”.
He added: “The atmosphere there was crazy. I have never experienced atmosphere like Anfield on a Champions League night.”
The 28-year-old, who grew up supporting hometown club Southampton, has three England caps and says scoring for the Three Lions against Wales was a career highlight.
However, he would have been experiencing a totally different career but for a stoke of good luck.
“If I’d not been handed a contract at Bournemouth, I would be on a building site,” he said. “I was there as a kid with my dad.”
WAYNE ROONEY’S Derby County are the latest Championship side to stop taking a knee before their matches.
Rams stars did not take the knee before yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Coventry.
Manager Rooney has been very vocal in his support of the campaign to oust racism in football.
However, in a statement yesterday, Derby said their “first-team players and senior staff” had reached a decision “unanimously”.
The statement added: “This decision has been made because the symbolic gesture of taking a knee is not enough.
“More needs to be done and we are committed to playing an important role in this. We will support the fight against all forms of discrimination by delivering the unified message of standing together as one.”
Other Championship clubs including Brentford, Bournemouth and Queens Park Rangers have also opted to stop taking a knee, with QPR Director of Football Les Ferdinand saying last September that its impact had been “diluted”.
