Spider-man actor Tom Holland reunites with his Avengers: Endgame directors for a bloated adaptation of Nico Walker’s semi-autobiographical novel.

Sticking fatally close to the book, the Russo brothers follow Holland’s Cherry on a path of self-destruction that begins on an Ohio university campus in 2002.

After splitting with his girlfriend Emily (Ciara Bravo), he joins the Army, gets back with Emily, gets married, goes to boot camp, witnesses the horrors of the Iraq War and returns home with PTSD where he becomes a heroin addict before embarking on a spree of bank robberies.

If that isn’t enough of a plot, the Russos stage minor episodes such as Cherry getting a short-lived job in an Italian restaurant. A scene of him tossing pizza dough in slow motion is nicely done but barely contributes to the story.

Too many of the Russos’ choices pull us out of the story rather than immersing us in it. The film’s needlessly long 141-minute running time is packed chock-full with trick shots, musical montages, flashbacks and freeze frames.

Still, Holland manages to make an impression. His self-indulgent directors made it impossible for me to connect with his character but there’s clearly a lot more to this young British actor than spandex and CGI. The Russos, well, not so much.
