Antonio gives us the Royal treatment

EMERSON: BOSS WANTS TO HELP EVERYONE IMPROVE... WE CAN ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS WITH HIM

- By TOM HOPKINSON

EMERSON ROYAL admits he and his Tottenham pals are never left in any doubt about where they stand with boss Antonio Conte.

Which presumably means there have been one or two home truths spoken at the Spurs training ground these past couple of days after Thursday’s Europa Conference League defeat by Mura.

The Italian was deeply upset by what he saw from what, Harry Kane and Oliver Skipp aside, was largely his back-up Spurs side in midweek.

Even when he sent the cavalry on in the second half they failed to turn around the game.

Conte admitted the performance had given him a greater idea of the level his squad was at and his demeanour post-match made clear how dismayed he was.

Not that Royal (right) will have been surprised by what he saw, though, because he has seen firsthand in the last month in training that there is no need to secondguess his new boss.

He said: “What you see is what you get with the manager.

“He has so much energy. He plays with us and this is very important. He wants to help everyone.

“We all know what we need to do in the game because during the week he tells us exactly what we need to do.

“He says, ‘When the ball is there, that’s where you need to be… when it’s further up the pitch you need to be in this position…’ He helps us a lot.

“He is a big name in the Premier League and is here to improve us. “I’m sure we are going to achieve great things with him.”

Thursday’s result suggests that might take longer than many

Spurs players and fans had hoped but they can at least start to put the result behind them today against Burnley.

Royal added: “The new manager arrived with this winning mentality and

it has

helped us a lot and strengthened the group.

“We know that we have each other’s backs and at any moment we can depend on each other.

“Burnley will be a difficult game. We already played against them in the League Cup.

“We know that they fight a lot as a team – they play a lot of long balls.

“We will go there to get the three points.”

Like Royal, Conte is expecting a physical game against Sean Dyche’s Clarets.

He said: “I know very well what kind of game we expect. Burnley is a tough game, they play with intensity, they put pressure on, they play a lot of long balls and they are very good in set-pieces, so we have to pay great attention.

“Before a game, you have to know everything about your opponent.

“We are studying Burnley. They are working with a really good manager for many, many years, and this is important for them.

“I know the atmosphere will be hot, but we must be ready, ready to fight and to give everything to try to get the three points.”
