Dunny’s Hairdryer

IT seems the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager of Manchester United has gone down well with the fans and, especially well, with football’s hipsters.

And there is absolutely no doubting the 63–year–old’s decent track record and the esteem in which he is held by the German coaching fraternity.

Since we all cannot stop talking about pressing, who better to get in than someone who, apparently, is godfather of the Gegenpress?

Rangnick (above) may be an inspired appointment and could leave the Old Trafford board with a dilemma at the end of the season.

A Premier League top-four slot is still attainable, a Champions League run still realistic and there is the FA Cup to have a pop at.

Have a good crack at those three and they may want Rangnick to be more than just a consultant for the next couple of years.

The way some people are talking, Ralf is a shoo–in to lift United, but there are two things that need to be remembered.

First, United have been pretty dreadful for a couple of months. They were victorious in Spain last week, but Villarreal – who have won just three times in La Liga – were pretty hopeless and missed a couple of chances to go ahead.

Second, for all his stellar reputation, there was, presumably, a reason Rangnick was at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Money, obviously. But it is hardly one of European football’s powerhouse operations.

He obviously has not had much time to make an impact at Lokomotiv – certainly not on the way the first team play – but the club has only won six of its 15 league matches this season.

No wonder the veteran fancied a slice of United.

And the very best of luck to him. But those who believe United and Rangnick are the perfect match, might be in for a nasty shock.
