Tyddyn Llan, Llandrillo, Denbighshire

- BETHANY ABBIT

WHERE AND WHY:

Tucked away in the beautiful North Wales countryside, Tyddyn Llan restaurant with rooms is the perfect hideout for those seeking some sanctuary from the cities.

The Georgian house, run by Bryan and Susan Webb, is set within beautiful manicured grounds with spectacular views. There’s a genteel, traditional atmosphere to this welcoming hotel, where food takes centre stage.

The Michelin-listed restaurant is packed with locals who tell us they have been coming here for years to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays with Bryan’s exceptional food.

Comfortable, cosy rooms are decorated with four-poster beds and Welsh furniture. Ours boasted a garden view and slipper bath.

There’s no mobile signal, but that’s not likely to trouble you when you’re sipping a gin and tonic on the sunny terrace.

ON THE MENU:

Afternoon tea, served in front of a warm fire, is accompanied by Welsh cakes or Bara brith (traditional tea bread). A range of tasty hors d’oeuvre, including Scotch eggs and salmon rillettes, are served in the cosy sitting room before dinner.

The accommodating maître d’ is almost evangelical about the delightful selection of dishes, which celebrate local produce and change depending on availability.

We are treated to a nutty, savoury artichoke soup and griddled scallops with cauliflower puree, pancetta, caper and raisin dressing.

Coffee and petits fours – including melt-inthe-mouth fudge – can be enjoyed in the sitting room.

In the morning, a full English breakfast is transformed into a full Welsh with laverbread, the star of the show.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE:

The glorious green rolling hills of the Dee Valley offer plenty of routes for both seasoned walkers and those who prefer a gentle stroll.

Tyddyn Llan is also well placed to explore Snowdonia National Park. Fishing, golf and watersports are all within easy reach. Chester is around an hour away by car.
