Philip funeral disgrace was a new low even for PM

KEIR STARMER

NEW revelations about Boris Johnson’s disgraceful behaviour are coming daily.

The sheer number of boozy, lockdown-breaking parties makes you wonder where he finds the time to do any work.

This week he was forced to apologise to the Queen for a party thrown at his house the night before Prince Philip’s funeral – a new low from a Prime Minister without shame.

It’s clearer than ever that the Tories think the rules they make don’t apply to them.

They have shown nothing but contempt for the rest of us.

The sad sight of Cabinet ministers being wheeled out to defend the indefensible suggests that Boris Johnson’s number-one priority is saving his own skin.

But we have also heard heartbreaking stories of people isolated from their friends and family even as they were dying.

And many of us had to miss births, birthdays, weddings – even funerals.

We should never forget the suffering and sacrifice of decent people in the national interest.

By contrast, Jacob Rees-Mogg suggested it had been “too tough” for those in Downing Street to follow the rules.

I have spent my entire professional career driven by a desire to do the right thing. As chief prosecutor, I tackled crime and anti-social behaviour to keep people safe. I locked up terrorists.

I don’t just say I want what’s best for Britain – I try to show it every day.

With Boris Johnson, it’s clear that what he wants is what’s best for him and his cronies.

While the Prime Minister is submerged in sleaze and scandal of his own making, the public are wondering whether they can pay their next energy bill. They are making different choices at the supermarket because of rising prices.

Too many are worried about whether they or their loved ones will be able to get a doctor’s appointment.

In the right hands, Government can improve people’s lives. It can bring energy bills down.

It can address rising prices. It can focus on the priorities of ordinary people.

But this Conservative government has shown it is unable to deliver for the people of this country.

The Prime Minister’s actions, and his inability to take any responsibility for them, means he can no longer do his basic duties.

In the public interest, he should resign.

I promise that the next Labour government will be decent. We’ll have integrity.

We’ll restore trust.

We’ll put your security and your prosperity above everything else.

You may not agree with everything we do, but we will show you respect.

And we’ll endeavour to earn your respect in return.

That’s the sort of Government this country deserves. Not the shambles we have at the moment.

For Boris Johnson, the party is over.
