Hotel of the week The Stratford Hotel East London

- JULIE DELAHAYE

WHERE AND WHY Tucked away in the heart of bustling East London, you’ll find an oasis of calm in the form of the four-star Stratford Hotel, the first seven floors of a distinctive 42-storey tower.

It may be upscale, but it’s far from pretentious. The 145-room hotel (it also has plush furnished rental loft apartments) has a laidback atmosphere from the moment you walk through the doors, where you’re greeted with an open plan bar/lounge and restaurant.

From the great coffees and cocktails to the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, it’s not difficult to see why this spot is a hit with locals as well as guests.

As for the rooms, these are spacious with comfortable beds, while the chic marble bathrooms come with lovely toiletries.

For something extra special, the Manhattan Studio is a suite of dreams with its glorious freestanding bathtub, huge bed and a real home-from-home feel.

In the evening, head to the Mezzanine Bar where mixologists create delectable signature drinks – have a sip while sinking into the plush furniture by the fireplace.

ON THE MENU Kitchen E20 is located right in the hotel lobby, with an open plan set-up so you can watch the chefs as they whip up some mouthwatering dishes.

Although the restaurant has a casual feel, the food is worthy of fine dining accolades.

Starters range from pea hummus and chicken yakitori (the latter was loved on our table), while mains include Robata lamb loin and grilled aubergine.

Al fresco dining is also on the cards courtesy of Terrace E20, with plenty of seating and heaters for chillier days. Mains from £12.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE You’ll be right on the doorstep of Westfield Stratford City, with 250 shops, while nearby Hackney Wick boasts plenty of canalside pubs and street art.

The hotel is minutes away from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where you’ll find the ArcelorMittal Orbit (take on the slide if you dare) and the London Stadium, home to West Ham and a top concert venue.

Want to go exploring further afield? There are bus and tube stops within easy walking distance, as well as Stratford

International train station.

WAKE UP CALL Rooms at The Stratford start at £155 per night.
