PARIS IS BEYOND BELIEF

- Interview: David Maddock

I’VE watched with horror this week as each day brings yet more depressing – and, to me, sinister – revelations from Paris over the Champions League Final fiasco (above).

Not only has it turned out the security footage from the stadium has been deleted, but also the footage from the transportation networks around the Stade de France was erased.

We all know what that implies. If that footage backed up the claims of the French police and their government, you can bet your mortgage on it being broadcast 24 hours daily.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin even claimed, in a hearing at their parliament, that the tapes proved his claim that there were 40,000 people without tickets. And he promised to deliver them to the relevant committees. Yet they were deleted.

And, of course, they never arrived. That stinks of a cover-up – and that is shocking.

I have my own experience at that stadium with my lad caught up in it, and I – like every other person affected – want answers.

There can be no cover-up. We cannot allow another situation where lives are put at risk from incompetent organisation and disastrous operational decisions.

I saw the 30-page report from the French government, saying they created a crush with a ‘barrage’ which didn’t work – then lied about it.

That the horrors of Hillsborough can possibly be repeated 33 years later is beyond belief. That lessons have not been learnt is beyond belief. That the same cover-up is used is not only beyond belief, it’s disgusting.

Everything about Paris and that Champions League Final is disgusting and we need answers – not cover-ups.
