All you need to get away safely
There’s no denying it, going on holiday has not been entirely straightforward since we emerged from all the lockdowns.
So if you’re jetting away soon, check travel association ABTA’s guide to being a savvy traveller this summer...
Regularly check the Foreign Office travel advice (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice) for your destination to keep up-to-date with the latest Covid-19 entry requirements and health advice, such as whether you’ll be required to wear a face covering. You can also sign up to receive email alerts.
Allow time to get the Covid documents you need for your destination, such as proof of vaccination or a negative test – and don’t forget to take face coverings if required.
Make sure you’ve got comprehensive travel insurance that covers your individual circumstances. Many policies do include cover for Covid, such as medical expenses while on holiday or cancellation if you’re unable to travel.
If you’re travelling to Europe, check how the changes since Brexit will affect your trip, such as the rules around mobile data roaming. Remember to take your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Do a final check of your passport to make sure it will be valid for your travel dates. If you’re travelling to the EU, it needs to be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive and have at least three months left on the day you leave.
Plan your journey to the airport in advance and allow extra time for traffic, planned road closures or engineering.
Make sure you arrive at the airport at the time advised by your airline and be ready to
present your passport and any Covid-related documents you need at check-in. You also have the option to check-in online which may save you time.
Don’t forget to prepare your hand luggage for security by making sure any liquids you’re taking are in containers of 100ml or less and all fit inside a 20cm x 20cm plastic bag. Place this bag in the trays provided – alongside any large electrical items such as laptops and tablets – and take off bulky items of clothing such as coats, jackets and belts.
If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet, book a package holiday with an ABTA member for the greatest level of protection.
