Wells still has the knack as late strike shares the spoils

- By RICHARD LATHAM

HUDDERSFIELD head coach Andre Breitenreiter insisted the Championship needs VAR after Nahki Wells’ last-gasp penalty robbed his side of two precious points in their relegation fight.

The visitors looked to be heading for a deserved win to ease relegation fears when Josh Koroma fired them in front from 10 yards out 81 minutes.

However with the game running deep into stoppage

Koroma 81 time, referee Rebecca Welch judged substitute Ollie Turton to have handled the ball.

Former Terriers favourite Wells stepped up to power his spot-kick past Lee Nicholls, leaving Breitenreiter to subdue his angry players at the final whistle.

“I have said before that the Championship needs VAR and this proved it,” he said. “We don’t think it was a penalty and the referee needs to be 150 per cent certain when awarding one in stoppage time.

“I spoke to her afterwards and she explained her views, but that doesn’t change anything.

“I feel so sorry for the players because the performance was all that I could have asked.”

Huddersfield clearly edged a game of few clear chances. City head coach Liam Manning admitted: “It was a tough and frustrating game for us.

“Cam Pring thought it was a penalty, but I was in no position to judge.”
