BERTRAND: DON’T PARK THE BUS,

- From Steve Bates

RYAN BERTRAND has pleaded with last-16 opponents Iceland to attack England in Nice tomorrow.

The Southampton defender has revealed he was as frustrated as anyone in the England camp after virtually playing as a winger against the negative tactics of Slovakia in the final Group B game in SaintEtienne.

Slovakia packed their defence and battled out a backs-to-the-wall, goalless draw against Roy Hodgson’s men to leave England in second place in their group behind Wales.

It means England are now in a seriously tough half the draw – but the Saints star is hoping Iceland’s minnows don’t follow suit and park the bus.

Bertrand said: “The teams we have come up against in the group stage have been ultra-defensive and really very dificult to break down.

“But we have managed to create chances and if the game against Slovakia had gone on any longer, we would have got the goal to win the match. Hopefully, though, moving into the later stages there is more to play for and teams will reflect that positively in the way they play.

“It’s a knockout game now and teams will realise thay have to come out a lot more.

“With the quality we have in attacking positions it might suit us to play a team who will try to get a goal and that can give us more space to play.” The damaging draw against Slovakia – and the opening stalemate against Russia in Marseille – has left England in a familiar position of having big teams blocking their route to the latter stages.

Critics

But Bertrand, 26, isn’t stressing as much as England’s critics over the failure to top the group.

The defender said: “Of course, we would have liked to have finished
