Roy: I will carry on if FA want it

-

his job depends on how well England perform in the tournament.

Defeat against Iceland in their last 16 showdown tomorrow will mean the end of the road for Hodgson.

But Dyke suggested an heroic failure in either the quarter or semi-finals could be enough to earn 68-year-old Hodgson an extension.

But Hodgson said: “I’m not begging for the job. I am prepared to carry on if the FA want me to but that is different to wanting it. If they don’t want me to, then my contract will have run out and that is how that will be.’’

Hodgson also defended his Three Lions record since taking over four years ago ahead of Euro 2012.

And he claimed that he has not even thought about the prospect of England losing to Iceland – and the sack that would follow.

The England boss added: “I believe in what I’ve done in particular over the last couple of years. I believe in the team I am working with and believe the team is showing potential that it will go on and do good things.

“This could be the start of something with these players, it depends. I think it can be. I know that I and my coaching staff are capable of carrying on.

“The FA will make the decision on what they want to do. One hopes they will do it on their thinking, observations, judgement and analysis on what is happening with the national team and not because someone has written something contrary to that.

“But to be honest, I am not even contemplating going out to Iceland.”
