TALENT SPOTTER JACKPOT

-

IN CASE you missed it, there was a seven-figure transfer in English football this week.

Nothing unusual in that. Apart from the fact that this was a member of the office staff who moved between two clubs. Yes, proof positive that the game in this country has lost all sense of perspective, as Steve Walsh, formerly Leicester’s assistant manager and head of recruitment, was hired by Everton as their new director of football.

At a cost of £2million. That was the fee which changed hands after Walsh – a thoroughly nice bloke by the way – moved on.

The former PE teacher was a man who, according to reports was ‘credited with helping discover’ several of the unknowns who went on to land the title for the Foxes last season.

So, did he unearth them or not? Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante are two of his, apparently.

Presumably, that list also includes the likes of Andrej Kramaric (below)– a £9.5m club record signing-turned-flop who was farmed out to Hoffenheim for the square root of not very much.

It’s just like master of bluster Damien Comolli claiming credit for Gareth Bale’s signing at Spurs. You sure? I like Walsh. But then I like Nigel Pearson too – on whose watch the bulk of the signings that drove Leicester’s historic season were made. So, who is actually responsible? Who knows?

Obviously, the former Foxes boss has landed on his feet at Derby County. He doesn’t really need to crow now he’s at the monied Rams.

The good news for Foxes fans is that Jon Rudkin, their under-stated director of football, remains in situ.
