A fortnight of magic sport

AUGUST 5 – The games will begin with a spectacular opening ceremony at Rio’s Maracana stadium. AUGUST 9 – Great Britain could claim its first gold of the games at the women’s equestrian team eventing final. The 200m men’s butterfly final also takes place and is likely to feature Michael Phelps.

AUGUST 12 – The women’s heptathlon kicks off, featuring Great Britain’s Jessica Ennis-Hill – who won gold in the same event in London in 2012. Fellow Brit Katarina JohnsonThompson will also compete.

In tennis the men’s doubles final also takes place, and could feature both Jamie and Andy Murray.

Bradley Wiggins could also be in action on the cycling track, in the men’s team pursuit final. AUGUST 13 – The women’s heptathlon final is today – we’ll be able to see if Jessica EnnisHill has repeated her London triumph.

Mo Farah is also likely to be one of the main contenders in the men’s 10km final.

AUGUST 14 – The men’s singles final takes place in tennis today – we could see Andy Murray face Novak Djokovic. AUGUST 15 – In cycling, Mark Cavendish could be in action in the men’s omnium final. Great Britain could have another shot at glory if Christine Ohuruogu reaches the women’s 400m final. AUGUST 16 – The women’s cycling track finals take place today – and Great Britain will have its fingers crossed that Laura Trott has made it.

AUGUST 18 – All eyes will be on the men’s 200m final, where Usain Bolt is tipped for his first gold of the games.

The women’s football final takes place today – and the USA will be hoping they can claim their fifth title in six games.

AUGUST 19 – The men’s and women’s 100m finals will take place today – with Usain Bolt set to run in his last ever Olympic race.

AUGUST 20 – A closing ceremony at the Maracana stadium will signal the end of the games, as Rio passes the Olympic baton to Tokyo, the 2020 host city.
