It’s jolly at the Roger
Roger Smith Hotel New York
THE WELCOME
After a 50-minute taxi ride from JFK airport I was greeted by friendly staff at this boutique hotel who took my bags to my room while I had a cocktail in the small but quirky bar.
The hotel is described as having “elements of a Manhattan high-rise, a downtown art gallery and a New York city aristocrat’s home”. And it is just that. There is a real air of luxury about the place but without seeming too grand.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The family-owned hotel is snuggled in the heart of midtown Manhattan – and its artdeco style certainly makes it stand out. Being so central means you only have to make a short walk to many of New York’s greatest attractions – such as Grand Central station, the Chrysler Building and Museum of Modern Art.
THE ROOM
This was not just a room – it was a mini apartment. The superior bedroom suite has a large living space with antique sofas, wingback chairs, dining table and fireplace.
There are even books to keep you entertained, which you can take and add to as you please.
The bedroom had a comfy kingsize bed, a spacious bathroom, and there was a kitchenette with microwave, mini fridge, dishes, tea and coffee-making facilities.
THE HOTEL
The hotel has two bars – an art-filled cocktail bar popular with business people and artists, and a rooftop bar with great city views, offering a selection of wine and beer.
There’s also an optional laundry and drycleaning service, and you can apply for gym passes to the city’s sports clubs.
LOVED
The quirky room style and comfortable feel.
HATED
The cost. But if you want a night in New York with a difference, it’s worth it.
BOTTOM LINE
Rooms start at £224. Suites from £265.
