Team GB heroes tipped for victory

ADAM PEATY EVENT: 100m breaststro­ke After smashing the world record at the World Aquatics Championsh­ips last year, Staffordsh­ire lad Adam, 21, will be up against tough competitio­n with South Africa’s 2012 Olympic champion Cameron der Burgh racing alongside him. FINAL: Sunday August 7 (2.53am on Monday) HELEN GLOVER AND HEATHER STANNING EVENT: Women’s pair rowing FINAL: Friday August 12 (2.24pm) Unbeaten together since 2011, with a run of 36 races, Glover and Stanning were winners of Team GB’s first gold at London 2012. With Glover’s fierce competitiv­eness and Stanning calm and methodical approach they look unstoppabl­e. ALISTAIR BROWNLEE EVENT: Triathlon FINAL: Thursday August 18 (3pm) A persistent ankle injury and constant victory for class competitor Javier Gomez of Spain have been the main drawbacks since Brownlee won gold four years ago, but with the ankle fixed and a broken elbow ruling out Gomez, Brownlee has a clear run. NICOLA ADAMS EVENT: Flyweight FINAL: Saturday August 20 (6pm) The first woman to win Olympic boxing gold, Nicola looks likely to become the first Briton since Harry Mallin in 1924 to retain an Olympic title in the ring. She’ll battle it out against China’s Ren Cancan, who is back for revenge after Adams beat her in London. But Adams, 33, believes she is in even better shape than she was four years ago. MO FARAH EVENTS: 5,000m and 10,000m FINALS: 10,000m: Saturday August 13 (1.25am on Sunday). 5,000m: Saturday August 20 (1.30am on Sunday) Mo arrives in Brazil chasing a fourth successive triumph at a major internatio­nal games over both 5,000m and 10,000m. After double gold in London, he repeated the trick at the Worlds in both Moscow and Beijing. But he has strong competitio­n from Ethiopian, Kenyan and Ugandan athletes. JESSICA ENNIS-HILL EVENT: Heptathlon FINAL: First day Friday August 12, concludes Saturday August 13 (final event 3.05am on Sunday) She’s suffered injury and given birth to son Reggie in the four years since her golden win in London, but she has proven her ability to go beyond her best when it counts. After her second fastest hurdles last month she is a strong contender once again. DAVID FLORENCE EVENT: Canoe single FINAL: Tuesday August 9 (7.16pm) A silver medallist in 2008 and 2012, David Florence hopes to go one better in Rio. Currently world number one, Florence is unquestion­ably favourite, and having been part of five separate training camps on the Rio course, the Scot should feel right at home on Brazilian water. LAURA TROTT EVENT: Team pursuit and omnium FINALS: Team pursuit Saturday August 13 (9.14pm), omnium concludes Tuesday August 16 (9.05pm) Laura could be the first British woman to win three Olympic golds. With seven world and 10 European titles to her name already, she has the track record to start as narrow favourite. SIR BRADLEY WIGGINS EVENT: Team pursuit FINAL: Friday August 12 (10.42pm) Four Olympic gold medals, a multiple world champion, Tour de France winner, holder of the Hour record – at 36 Sir Bradley Wiggins isn’t slacking. But one more medal and he will surpass Sir Chris Hoy as his country’s most decorated Olympian. CHARLOTTE DUJARDIN EVENT: Dressage FINAL: Monday 15 August (2pm) Charlotte took gold in both individual and team events in 2012. She describes her mount as greedy and unaffectio­nate, but his ability to deal with the noise and pressure in Brazil could see them triumph again. ANDY MURRAY EVENT: Tennis FINAL: Sunday August 14 (TBC) Andy’s triumph four summers ago marked the start of his first golden period setting up his US Open victory a month later and first Wimbledon title the following summer. After his win on Centre Court last month hopes are high for Rio. Several top players pulled out due to Zika, but Serb Novak Djokovic still stands between him and victory. JADE JONES EVENT: 57kg taekwondo FINAL: Wednesday August 17 (2am on Thursday) The youngest British gold medallist in 2012, Jade has said she doesn’t want to be a one-hit wonder. Wins in 10 of her last 13 tournament­s, show she is on top form. And while she is up against her old rival, Spaniard Eva Gomez, the 23-year-old Brit’s grit gives her a fighting chance of coming out on top once again.
