IN these turbulent Brexit times I’m casting my vote for this comically violent American action thriller.
Election Year is the third film set in a horrifying futuristic world where all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours once a year.
Frank Grillo is back as Leo Barnes, a bullish, brutal cop with a conscience. He is now head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, played by Elizabeth Mitchell.
She stands for US President to abolish the Purge, the annual night of bloodshed.
Costumed crazies armed with chainsaws and machine pistols rampage through neon streets like a gruesome Halloween party.
Normal people, i ncluding Roan’s supporters, have to arm themselves. The Purge makes the ruling far-right group New Founding Fathers a lot of money.
They see it as the ideal way to have Roan permanently removed so they suspend rules protecting political figures. It is a decision that seems destined to backfire.
A betrayal by one of the senator’s team leaves Roan and Barnes on the streets of Washington DC at the height of the Purge.
Citizens are tortured, burnt, shot, hanged and guillotined. No one stops to eat, drink or sleep and the tension rises with the body count.
The photogenic pair find allies in shotgun-wielding shopkeepers and veteran Purge players.
Election Year’s satirical intent is somewhat neutered by t he astonishing real-life US presidential election race. But as an action movie this is the candidate that ticks the right boxes. WILL Poulter was brilliant next to Leonardo DiCaprio in Oscar-winning The Revenant but is curiously lethargic in this British coming-of-age drama.
He is gap-year student Jack, who falls in with a bohemian crowd and gives up his trip to South America, law career and middle class life.
Jack pursues his passion for photography and flaky French beauty Evelyn, played in an uneven performace by model-turned-actress Alma Jodorowsky.
Evelyn is in a group of carefree young things sharing a large house. Model Cara Delevingne is one of the pals in a role that is an extension of her carefully cultivated public image.
Kids In Love is filmed in a sunny blissed-out London which is like a lifestyle commercial. But it’s full of shallow characters. They are not kids and have little love between them.
