Andy looking Grand to join tennis elite

- By David McCarthy in New York

ANDY MURRAY can join an elite band of tennis superstars if he reaches the final of the US Open which starts tomorrow.

Only Roger Federer, Rod Laver and Novak Djokovic in the open era to have made the final of every Grand Slam event in a calendar year. But Murray will emulate their feats if he can go all the way to the final at Flushing Meadows, having done so at the Australian, French and Wimbledon this year.

The Scot, who faces unseeded Czech Lukas Rosol in the first round on Tuesday, is in confident mood as he tries to complete what would be a magnificent treble of Wimbledon, Olympic and US triumphs.

And he admits that reaching a fourth Slam final in a year would be another terrific achievement.

Murray said: “That would be big for sure. It’s not something that happens regularly in the course of history. But because of the guys who have been around just now (Federer and Djokovic), it seems to have happened a lot.

“But it ‘s obviously not an easy thing to do with three different surfaces and the conditions here and in August are quite different in terms of how the court plays.

“It’s a big challenge obviously. I do feel like I am in the position to have a good run here.”

Meanwhile, Laura Robson came through three rounds of qualifiers to earn a place in the main draw and faces fellow Brit Naomi Broady on Tuesday.

The former British No.1 is now fully fit and clawing her way back to the top of the game.

She said: “It’s a totally different vibe for me now. I was so happy to just be in qualies and to play three good matches to get through to main draw is all I could ask for.

“I’m just literally taking it one match at a time,” she added.
