Dyche Keane to keep Mike

- By Tom Hopkison

BURNLEY will offer defender Michael Keane an improved contract in a bid to ward off interest from Chelsea.

The 23-year-old is on the Blues’ radar as they consider replacements for John Terry.

And Burnley boss Sean Dyche is keen to move to tie the player down.

Leicester City tried and failed with a £15million bid to land former Manchester United trainee Keane in the summer.

And the Clarets are bracing themselves for further interest in January and next summer.

Keane moved to Turf Moor in 2015 on the back of a successful loan spell. He had already spent time on loan from United in the Championship at Leicester, Derby and Blackburn.

So impressive was his form last season as he helped Burnley to promotion that the champions made a move for him in the summer.

Claudio Ranieri wanted him to provide competition to Wes Morgan and Robert Huth, and saw the player as a long-term investment.

But Burnley refused to do business with a player Dyche saw as integral to his plans.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sanctioned a move to bring back David Luiz in August but manager Antonio Conte knows Terry, 35, is in the twilight of his career.

Keane’s nationality is a bonus for Chelsea too.
