“I went out and ended up with my girlfriend. She told me she had slept with one of her ex-partners, and I got angry.

The l oose forward and stand- off was breathalys­ed during training by coach Justin Morgan and failed.

Cooke says: “Justin flew off the handle, shouting ‘ F*****g get out of here, you will never play for this club again.’”

Despite his run- ins with Morgan, Cooke is keen quash a rumour that he slept with the coach’s wife.

He said: “Even my mates were asking me about it, but it was total nonsense.

It was the death of Cooke’s mother Christine from cancer in 2011 that helped him turn his life round. He said: “Mumwas“Mum was always on my side. When I got done for drink-driving, she blamed the car. When there was trouble in town, it was everyone else, not me. ”

Cooke, now coaching with promotion- winning Leigh Centurions, adds: “My mum was my biggest supporter.

“She was fierce in defence of her children, and I needed more defending than most.”
