Guard’s horror wound from tackling inmate

Melanie, 42, told the Sunday People: “I’ll show her a silly dog falling over on YouTube or something but I’ll keep her away from the rest of it for as long as possible.
“She is a massive Little Mix fan but I’ve started to be more sparing in what I show her. I don’t let her watch videos by artists that aren’t appropriate for her. That makes me a bit sad.
“All young women want to look sexy and hot so I understand it’s hard. But Exclusive A PRISON officer suffered a gruesome head wound when he rushed to help a fellow guard who was chasing an out-of-control lag.
His skull was opened from ear to ear after he fell 20ft on to a metal plate holding up security netting.
The unnamed guard, in his 50s, had clambered up to help grab the prisoner, who had climbed on to wire over a landing at Holme House jail in Stockton, County Durham. The victim was then thrown off, cracking his head on the plate. A source said: “It was horrible, there was blood everywhere. The blow opened his head up from end to end and it’s a miracle it didn’t kill him.”
The officer, with more than 20 years’ service, needed 20 staples and stitches in the wound after the attack at the category B jail on September 28. Last night he was still recovering at home. The source said the lag had been told he was being sectioned over his increasingly bizarre behaviour.
It is understood he should have been informed and controlled in the prison’s “care and separation unit. But because of management pressure not to put more prisoners in the unit, he was told in a normal area and kicked off,” said the source.
A Prison Service spokesman said: “Police are investigating this incident and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
