THE WELCOME

All opulence and French style – everything you’d expect from a getaway in central Paris. A short taxi ride from the Gare du Nord train station, the reception has high ceilings, lavish marble fittings and a warm welcome. The hotel opened in 1889 – as did the Eiffel Tower – but recently had a £40million refurb to top up the Parisian glamour.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

One of three Hiltons in the city centre, it is the group’s flagship Paris hotel, in the smart Opéra quarter. The architectural gem is within easy reach of iconic sites and attractions. It is close to the Palais Garnier opera house and the Louvre, plus famous department stores Galeries Lafayette and Le Printemps. Gare Saint-Lazare, which provides the metro and domestic rail services, is immediately opposite but you can walk to the ChampsÉlysées in 20 minutes.

THE ROOM

Compact but with all the mod cons, including a Nespresso machine. We had a double, with huge windows looking out on to the lively main street. A big bed, TV and en suite made for a comfy one-night stay. There are 268 rooms across five floors, including 29 suites, some of which have balconies. Bathrooms mainline on white marble, but with heated floors, they will never be cold on your feet.

THE FOOD

This historical centrepiece of the hotel is Le Grand Salon, which has 46ft ceilings and hand-painted frescos. It is stunning – a sophisticated place for guests to enjoy cocktails, champagne, whisky and beer. Food is innovative and prepared with fresh ingredients. Meanwhile, there is the Pain Quotidien, a surprisingly low-key choice for a hotel this glam, which offers warm breads. Le Petit Bar, just to the left as you enter the hotel, is a more cosy aperitif spot.

LOVED

The romantic setting of Paris. Perfect for celebrating with a loved one.

HATED

There’s very little to dislike. But if you’re looking for a more peaceful retreat, it may be best to avoid the busy street.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Rooms from £166 per night.
