Furious Roo blasts critics
Rooney: Enough is enough. I’m proud to play for my country and I’m not finished yet
ANGRY Wayne Waynne Rooney has hit back at critics, branding his recent treatment “disgraceful”.
The Manchester United and England captain believes there has been a total lack of respect.
Rooney – a second-half sub in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal – came under fire for a booze binge while on international duty after boss Gareth Southgate gave the squad a day off.
But the 31-year-old said last night: “I’m proud to play for my country and proud of my achievements. It’s not finished yet. I think what’s been going on is disgraceful. It shows a
lack of respect and I think enough is enough. That’s all I want to say.
“It feels as if the media are writing my obituary. I won’t let that happen.”
The country’s record goal scorer was photographed in an England tracksuit looking the worse for wear following a late-night drinking session at the Grove hotel in Hertfordshire the day after the 3-0 World Cup qualifier win against Scotland.
He had picked up an injury in that game and was sent home before the 2-2 draw with Spain on Tuesday.
Rooney is furious his career for club and country is being rubbished by critics who claim he is no longer a force for either.
He been dropped by both club boss Jose Mourinho and Southgate in recent weeks – but maintains he still has plenty to offer.
Interim boss Southgate will be named Three Lions manager this week, with the FA hoping Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard will join him in a revamped set-up.
Liverpool legend Gerrard and Chelsea icon Lampard will be heading home after finishing spells in the US with MLS clubs LA Galaxy and New York City FC.
The FA believe their experience could prove invaluable to Southgate, who will have a formal interview tomorrow and is expected to thrash out personal terms for a four-year contract.
