- Rosie Dunn

WAYNE Rooney is pitching in to help a military charity in honour of murdered soldier Lee Rigby.

The England captain has thrown his might behind the Lee Rigby Foundation, which was set up by the hero fusilier’s mum Lyn to care for bereaved relatives and injured veterans.

Rooney was the all- time favourite player of Lee, a lifelong Man Utd supporter.

Now Lee’s foundation will host a star- studded charity ball at the club’s Old Trafford ground, backed by Rooney and other players.

Last night Lyn said: “We are all so thrilled to have the support of Wayne, his team-mates and one of the charity’s patrons, will also be taking part in the event by entertaining guests with an after-dinner speech.

Colin said: “I couldn’t be prouder to represent the Lee Rigby Foundation. I know the love and commitment Lyn has poured into trying to help fellow suffering relatives and veterans.”

A fund-raising auction will be held at the ball with a signed pair of football boots from Rooney up for grabs.

The foundation is currently raising funds for the Lee Rigby Lodge, where it will provide respite breaks for grieving families and injured veterans in renovated chalets. Set in picturesque Staffordshire moorland, the retreat will offer therapies and healing.

Lyn said: “Having experienced profound grief through losing my son in such terrible circumstances, I know first-hand there are few places to turn to for love and support and respite.

“To have the opportunity to walk away from everyday life to find some peace is such a help. I know how important these breaks will be for military families and suffering veterans.”
