LIVERPOOL v BURNLEY CASH IN THE ATTACK

Klopp: I’ll spend big to bag title

- By Steve Bates By John Richardson

BUYING a trophy has never floated Jurgen Klopp’s boat – but he has vowed to splash the cash this summer to land the title for Liverpool.

Klopp revealed he had the chance to buy a trophy in Germany – literally – but could not bring himself to do it.

When Klopp won the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 he could have purchased a replica of the trophy as a memento of winning the title.

He resisted that urge, but after keeping cash in the bank in January the Kop boss is planning a summer spree to try to end a 27-year title drought at Anfield.

Klopp revealed: “When I won the league in Germany I was offered the chance to get a replica of the trophy.

“I don’t know how much it cost, but it would have been expensive because it looks just like the original.

“I didn’t order it because I didn’t need this because I know we won it. I still know how it was so I don’t AN 11th hour sicknote from an FA bigwig has given Joey Barton an unexpected Premier League lifeline.

Now the controversial 34-year-old Burnley midfielder (right) will be looking to take advantage of the surprise reprieve against Liverpool today.

He was due to face an FA disciplinary hearing at Wembley on Wednesday only to be told it was off due to illness.

The commission was going to pass judgement on the former Manchester City and Newcastle United star’s confession of placing 1,260 football-related bets between 2006 and 2016. need to feel it and say,say ‘Oh ‘Ohmymy God,God that is how it was’. I want to win lots of things in my life still and I was lucky I could win a lot of things already. But that is how it is and it doesn’t help my programme here.

“I am probably at Liverpool because my teams have won things in the past and that is good and now we work on winning here.”

Despite being happy with the development of his squad, Klopp knows that he needs reinforcements to give Liverpool a title chance next season.

Satisfaction

Liverpool, who face Burnley today, were far from the biggest spenders last summer and kept their powder dry in the last window.

The German boss maintains he has more satisfaction from building a winning team with hungry young players rather than buying success in the transfer market.

Now, with money to spend, he recognises the need to open the chequebook to give Liverpool a fighting chance of the title.

“We have a plan, yes but look, it’s March,” he added. “Yes, the plan is different things.things It’s still the improvement of the players that are here and it’s important to remember these players can get better.

“Another thing is transfers. Are we looking for players? Yes. Are we close to signing them? No, so nothing to say about that, but that’s how it is.

“We are not saying we want four or five players and clubs say, ‘Thank God you asked’.

“We know what we want and are trying really hard to make things work.

“We didn’t do the transfers last time just to have a positive transfer record at the bank.

“In winter we were looking, but you can’t buy a player only because you need a player. I don’t care who.

“Signing no player is better than buying the wrong player.

“We are in a situation now where the basis is really good for us to improve and we will spend money and earn money in the transfer market too.”
