Happy ending for horror bred pups

- By Vikki White

THE future looked grim for chihuahua Peggy and her daughter Pip after they were disabled by bad breeding then dumped in a ditch.

But now the tiny teacup pups have found a new home TOGETHER, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Our sister paper the Daily Mirror featured their story when they were abandoned last August. Peggy, three, had part of her leg missing and Pip, just six weeks old, had only half a brain, leaving her blind and with no eyelids.

New owner Penny Andrews, from Norfolk, said: “I saw them and fell in love. They were so cute and I thought, ‘I can look after them’.

“They have come a long way and now live the life of luxury. They are fabulous – they’ve settled in so well.”

It comes after a new law is set to crack down on backstreet breeders selling tiny trendy teacup pups. Under OUR vet Brian Faulkner, from Petplan, has 16 years of experience and is a freelance working all over the country. Send your questions to Brian at: Petplan, Great West House, Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex, TW8 9DX or via Petplan’s Facebook page facebook.com/ PetplanUK. the plans, the sale of any dog under eight weeks old will be illegal and anyone selling more than three litters a year will need a licence.

“Designer” teacup pets are prone to serious health problems, including breathing issues and bones so fragile they can break at a touch.

For Peggy and Pip, who were dumped in Basildon, Essex, the law is too late. But after round-the-clock care, they are bouncing back.

And RSPCA volunteer Penny, 61, who also has a Jack Russell, four cats, a cockatiel and a tortoise, says they are both “so happy”.

“All the animals get on well. The dogs sleep in the bed under the duvet. I lost my husband recently so they are my extended family. “Pip is a dream. She is so clever – the way she runs around and never bumps into anything. You could quite easily forget that she can’t see. And Peggy is so laid-back and just wants cuddles.”

If you are thinking of adopting an animal, visit rspca.org.uk/findapet. MY kitten, who is about six months old, has suddenly got terrible breath. Is this a symptom of something? Should I be worried about it?
