Speaking of drinks, you’re also in a south-facing courtyard, so sheltered from any winds – ideal for sitting outside with a glass of wine.

When the sun sinks, a large wood burner roaring in the corner of the living area adds a cosy feel.

And dog owners, rejoice – two well-behaved pooches are welcome to join you. They would love the area, it’s prime walkies territory.

Just seven miles away is the picture-postcard seaside village of Aberdovey, meaning the mouth of the River Dovey – both pronounced, appropriat­ely, like lovey-dovey.

There is a gorgeous five- mile stretch of sandy beach plus quaint shops, cafes and pretty fisherman’s cottages to make you “ooh” and “ahh”. The traditiona­l seaside town of Tywyn is also five miles away, with its busy High Street and miles of golden beaches and promenade.

We enjoyed dinner here in the Salt Marsh Kitchen, tucking into fresh fish pulled from Cardigan Bay.

Blue paint and bare timber gives this intimate bistro the look of a New England restaurant – and the fish dishes make you even more delighted to be by the seaside.

These talented knitters have made their woolly wonders into street art to raise cash for their community centre. And it’s quite the spectacle, with Gwril the knitted giant peaking over a garden wall and a host of other knitted pets, people and mystical creatures surprising you.

Back at the Llanfendig­aid Estate, there was a heated indoor swimming pool in the grounds we could share with the other three holiday homes.

The four properties accommodat­e 31 people and include Llanfendig­aid – a magnificen­t family home packed with antiques, portraits and collectabl­es from around the world.

It is set in an acre of wooded gardens and sleeps up to 17 – great for a classy hen or stag do or big family celebratio­n.

And Dad certainly had a 70th to remember.

Long dog walks across quiet sandy beaches, ambling around quaint streets streets, perusing independen­t shops with stomachs full of fresh seafood – it all adds up to quali ity time with the family.
