You see, shopping at Jade Market in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district has a very strict format. As I found out when the petite female stallholder started tugging my arm.

The haggling is all very friendly, even flirtatious at times, but be prepared to bargain hard. I eventually walked off with a bracelet for 50 HK dollars – about a fiver – which had a starting price of 180.

Under the corrugated roof, this market has rows of stalls selling all things jade – rings, earrings, statues, carvings and ornaments. You could spend hours searching through the treasures. But leave enough time to view the delights of the other markets, especially those devoted to flowers, fashion and goldfish.

This city is a shoppers’ paradise catering for all budgets. If you’re willing to splash the cash, bespoke tailors and designer shops are dotted all over this southeastern Chinese territory.

Also in Kowloon is the lively Temple Street night market, which oozes atmosphere. Police roam the side streets, moving on ladies who are touting for business.

You can hear the sizzling of woks as chefs cook for customers sitting at foldout tables on the street.

There are plates of seafood, duck, TREAT yourself to lunch at China Tang Landmark restaurant, which has some of the finest delicacies Hong Kong has to offer. MAKE sure you visit Chi Lin Nunnery, which has beautiful manicured gardens and stunning Buddhist temple. DISCOVER the secret gardens on top of the city’s skyscrapers. And get more stunning views on a Victoria Harbour ferry trip.
