Big Matt finish would put a shine on Oakley’s exit

MATT OAKLEY wants to sign off on his playing career in style with Exeter at Wembley today.

Oakley (left) is looking to bring the curtain down with his boots on, by making his 695th appearance.

And there would be no more fitting finale for the veteran midfielder, 39, to bow out – as he bids to join an exclusive club.

Oakley hopes to complete the set by adding League Two glory to his past Championship and League One promotions.

Oakley, who also played in the FA Cup Final for Southampton in 2003, said: “I want to be successful at every club and if I can win promotion here then it would be a great way to sign off.

“I’ve been privileged to play for some good teams in Southampton, Derby and Leicester. And to play in the FA Cup Final was amazing. But this game is as big as any of them.

“I almost finished at Leicester six years ago, but was told by several players, ‘you are a long time retired’. Then the move to Exeter came about and the gaffer Paul Tisdale has kept me going.

“Now my body is telling me it’s the right time. Football is like a drug to me. I want to stay in the game but my playing days have to come to an end at some stage. This feels like the right occasion.”

Oakley is fit after a hip injury and hopes to force his way into the side to face Blackpool after missing the semi-final. He added: “We are a young team and everyone will be nervous – but they must trust their ability to come through.”
