FANS WILL REMEMBER OUR NAME
HUDDERSFIELD defender Tommy Smith has called on David Wagner’s Class of 2017 to make their own history.
The Terriers, who won a hat-trick of league titles in the 1920s, are looking to reach the top flight for the first time in 45 years.
Smith said: “This game against Reading is about making new history.
“The fans talk proudly about what this club did years and years ago, but we really want the people of Huddersfield to be talking about the players that got the club into the Premier League.
“Forty-five years outside the top flight is a long time, so if we can be the history-makers, the players who have given this town something to cheer about, we would love that.”
Smith, 25, was airlifted to hospital two years ago when he was knocked cold in a collision during a derby clash with Leeds.
He said: “I remember waking up in the helicopter on the way to hospital and I started to panic because I had no idea where I was and all I could see was the clouds outside the window.
“I won’t lie, it was a scary moment – probably even more so for my family.
“It does put everything in perspective, but then you realise that it’s all part and parcel of the game and you just get on with it.”
Smith added: “My girlfriend will be at Wembley, sat with my mum, dad, grandma, grandad and cousin.
“I spoke to my mum and she said that most people dream of opportunities like this – and that I had to make sure I enjoyed it.”
