Champions League misery last week, they had every excuse going to fail. But the Gunners produced. And then some.
Perhaps stung by the thought they will have to traipse around in the Europa League or by the fact that London is royal blue, or even by the thought that this could be Wenger’s swansong, the men in those famous red and white shirts stood tall.
It took a controversial fourthminute goal to set them on their way. But no one could deny them this victory.
Certainly Chelsea couldn’t. Reduced to 10 men after Victor Moses received a second yellow for diving, they incredibly managed to draw level before Ramsey struck the killer blow.
It was a massive triumph for Wenger, who has yet another FA Cup to plonk down in the boardroom at the Emirates.
If this is to prove his final act, what a way to go. His seventh FA Cup triumph. And this would be a fitting epitaph. It really would. It was a corking final.
With Per Mertesacker making his first start for over a year, the Gunners showed how much they wanted this, almost from the first whistle.
