Darling duds of May get the chop

- By Nigel Nelson

THERESA May postponed her Cabinet reshuffle to launch a No10 bloodbath yesterday.

The Prime Minister sacrificed her two top aides, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, to avoid a leadership challenge.

Former minister Gavin Barwell, who lost his seat on Thursday, was named the new Downing Street chief of staff.

Ministers will now have to wait until 10am today to hear their own fates.

Mr Timothy and Ms Hill are widely blamed for the Tories’ disastrous campaign. Mr Timothy said yesterday: “I take responsibility for the content of the whole manifesto.”

Rude

He was accused of inserting the elderly care package that derailed the campaign when Mrs May was forced into a humiliating U-turn.

Shortly before the pair departed, one of the PM’s former aides claimed they had forced her out and accused them of creating a “toxic” atmosphere in No10.

Katie Perrior left when the election was called. Yesterday, she accused Ms Hill of coming up with “crazy” ideas the PM rarely overruled. And she added of both: “‘They would send rude texts, which is not acceptable. What the PM needs at a time when you’re going through Brexit is diplomats, not street-fighters.”

Top Tories made it clear Mr Timothy and Ms Hill, who have been with Mrs May since she was Home Secretary, had to go as if they stayed on, the PM would not change her leadership style.
