NIALL HORAN EXCLUSIVE I’M YOUNG AT HEART

Singer’s not into older women, unlike Harry TORMENT OF ELDERLY IN CARE STAFF CRISIS

- By Halina Watts SHOWBIZ EDITOR

THE elderly are being left in reused soiled pads because of chronic staff shortages at care homes, claims a damning report.

Three-quarters of care staff say they are so busy, residents’ dignity and well-being is jeopardised.

They are denied visits to the toilet and kept indoors for days, reveals a survey by care workers’ union Unison. Ninety per cent of NIALL Horan says he doesn’t share bandmate Harry Styles’s appetite for older women.

Niall – who famously flirted with 57- year- old TV host Lorraine Kelly – has insisted he prefers his love interests to be closer to his own age.

When asked his opinion of more mature women the singer said: “Not for me.” He added “Too old, I’m 23. I’ve been so busy I haven’t noticed if there has been any more attention from the ladies. I’ve been really boring.”

Despite the drought Niall won’t be turning to Tinder and other web apps to find a love match. “Tinder would be a s*** show, I’m not going to do that,” he said. “That’s madness.”

But one thing he is certain of, he wants to reunite with One Direction. He explained: “It would be stupid not to get back together. But right now it’s so fun. the 1,000 private and council care staff questioned blame staff shortages for residents’ ordeals.

More than a quarter of workers said they did not have time to help the elderly to eat and drink.

Staff added they are often too busy to take people to the toilet, or notice if a resident’s health has deteriorated.

Some care homes are accused of It’s so different and it’s a new way of challenging ourselves.

“People are freaking out over the split but it’s been a yearand-a-half.

“If I live to 80, which I’m planning on doing, a year out of that is nothing. It’s not a long time.”

Enjoying the single life, Niall regularly shuns A- list glamour preferring the Tube instead.

The former 1D singer, who is flying solo since the band’s split, told how his typical day in the capital involves cycling, strolling in parks and hanging out on the underground.

Rivalry

Niall, 23, said: “Everyone thinks we are these crazy lunatic weirdos who do music but really we are just normal people.

“I love going out on the Boris bike and having an ice cream in Battersea Park.

“I go out on the Tube, I get noticed sometimes, it’s alright.”

Despite having sold more than 20million records around the world, Niall enjoyed exploring Asia hassle-free with three pals and a rucksack last year. He said: “I went backpacking, the whole travelling thing really interests me.

“Except we all got diarrhoea at once, all four of us. That was interesting. I want to go back to Asia and travel more.”

But first he is looking forward to continuing with his solo career having just launched new single Slow Hands.

Despite going up against his bandmates who have all released records – including Liam Payne and Harry Styles – he’s not feeling the pressure.

He said: “There are two ways of looking at the break up.

“You can either embrace it or dwell on the past.

“I’ve thought that was great and so much fun, but at the minute I’ve got two songs out and I want it to be as successful as they can be.

“If we were releasing the same kind of music I could see why people would think there would be a rivalry but it’s completely different.

“It’s good fun actually, I’m actually listening to the others’ stuff. Me and Liam are in the same band but Liam released an R& B record, it’s great.

“Everyone is doing their own thing.”

He added: “I’m going to see what happens with this record.

“If there is a want for more music I will make it for as long as I can.

“I hang around with a lot of people and we are always jamming so if something comes up that’s great.” forcing staff to ration equipment like wheelchairs, wet wipes, gloves, incontinence pads and hoists.

Workers add there is often not enough time to help residents wash or comb their hair or cut their nails.

Only two in five staff say they have had training in how to care for people with mental health issues or those with a physical or learning disability. Unison will today launch a campaign to overhaul standards in care homes.

Union general secretary Dave Prentis said: “It is shocking that some care home owners are allowed to look after people when they don’t have enough staff to deliver quality care.

“Government must act to fund social care properly and protect the most vulnerable in society.”
