“For those directly affected by the events it’s normal to have flashbacks and nightmares, or experience painful memories of what happened.

“In the first month following a traumatic event the best thing you can do is talk to someone you trust and care for, like family and friends.

“Talking about what happened and expressing your fears and feelings about the event in a social environmen­t reduces the traumatic impact the most.

“There is no need to see a profession­al. The most helpful thing you can do is coming together socially.

“This could be in churches, mosques, community centres, even the pub – wherever people prefer to gather.”

He said vigils are excellent ways of dealing with the trauma because they mean people are brought together under a common purpose.

Dr Chisholm said: “It not only brings people together in the community but also a wide selection of people.

“With the terror attacks and the Grenfell fire, the events can be fairly socially divisive.

“They can prise people apart, pitting Muslims against Christians and so on.

“Vigils are great because they’re for everybody. Everybody mixes and talks.”

“Those most at risk are people who have suffered similar traumas in the past. It’s expected that they’ll get more flashbacks, nightmares, a feeling of loss, emotional pain, a feeling of fear and being on guard.”

Dr Chisholm also advises that the best way to help a friend or family member suffering in the aftermath of these tragedies is to listen to them.

He said: “Offer to listen without making judgments and with compassion.

Steam the tenderstem for 3-4 minutes. 2. Mix together the creme fraiche, dill and horseradis­h in a small bowl and set aside. 3. Lightly toast the rye bread or pumpernick­el. 4.
