Mum dies giving birth at scandal-hit hospital Family outrage at delay in giving lifesaving jab

A SCANDAL-STRUCK hospital has been slated again after a first-time mother died from a blood clot after giving birth.

Postwoman Josllyn Liverpool, 41, died fewer than 24 hours after her son Austin was delivered by caesarean section.

An official report by North Middlesex Hospital reveals she should have been given an anti-clotting jab two hours before the tragedy from deep vein thrombosis.

Her sister Gilder, 43, said: “Staff told us she should have had the jab in the morning after the birth the previous night. Then the injection was delayed until 4pm.

“A midwife later wrote on her notes to give the drug at 6pm. We don’t know why it wasn’t given at 4pm. It could have saved her life.”

The report criticises the consultant in charge for failing to read Josllyn’s notes that showed a high heart rate. This may have resulted in a change of care. She was in a High Dependency Unit because womb fibroids meant a risk of bleeding. She wore special socks to combat clots but the report suggests she should also have worn special boots. Gilder and four other sisters are raising little Austin in North London after the tragedy in April last year. “He was an unexpected gift at her age and she was very excited,” said Gilder. Josllyn’s death is the latest stain on a hospital where poor care has been highlighted in a People campaign.

In July a heartbroken couple revealed their baby Alba May Pemberton died 62 hours after birth because her brain had been starved of oxygen during labour.

The hospital has apologised but said an inquest made no criticism of her critical care. It added: “Our own review of the case has highlighted a number of issues which we have now addressed.”
