Emmerdale to screen horror acid attack

- By Halina Watts by

EMMERDALE is about to get a shock storyline about an acid attack.

The ITV soap has been speaking to victims to make the script as sensitive as possible in the wake of a string of similar assaults in real life.

A source said: “All soaps want to portray what is going on in the real world and Emmerdale is leading the way by broaching the troubling rise of acid attacks.

“Scriptwriters are in the early stages of drafting a plotline and they have been closely speaking to victims to get their point of view. It’s a very sensitive subject and has to be portrayed in the right way.”

The plot comes after the latest attack in London when six moped riders were sprayed in the face with a corrosive fluid.

One victim has permanent eye damage.

The West Midlands and Essex have also seen large rises in acid attacks in recent years, soaring from 340 in 2014 to 843 last year.

Emmerdale has previously tackled a string of sensitive storylines including Ashley Thomas battling dementia, Holly Barton’s death from a heroin overdose as well as Rhona Goskirk reporting Pierce Harris for rape. Executive producer Iain MacLeod previously said: “Emmerdale, week on week, continues to be really dramatic.

“I would struggle to say there is one particular week that is any more or less dramatic.”

Last night an Emmerdale spokesman said: “We never comment on storyline speculation”.

The soap has beaten its rivals EastEnders and Coronation Street to a string of awards.

But in 2016 outraged Emmerdale viewers demanded an apology and threatened to boycott the show following the broadcast of a joke about cerebral palsy.
