Wayne has focus pocus

- By Neil Moxley

WAYNE ROONEY will shrug off his Old Trafford return, just as he dismissed a potential switch to Manchester City in the past.

The Everton striker will revisit his old stamping ground today in the unfamiliar position of finding his way to the away dressing room.

As the Red Devils’ record scorer, the only thing the 31-year-old has to prove is his renewed relationship with the Toffees’ support.

But according to one-time team-mate Louis Saha, who has experienced the same life on both sides of the fence in Manchester and Merseyside, Rooney is a past master at staying focused.

And if he blocked out the furore and controversy that surrounded a potential move to City, then he will be able to concentrate at Old Trafford. Saha said: “I remember when there was an issue with his contract – should he stay or go to Manchester City? There were so many stories but he kept scoring goals. He was composed.

“Even if he went six or seven games without scoring and there were problems, then he started to score for fun. He was able to leave those contract issues to one side and get on with it.

“He was so focused, so dedicated. He wasn’t vocal in the dressing-room. He would do his stuff on the training ground and go home. You wouldn’t hear anything about it.

“He’s a kid, he’s a leader but he wants to enjoy it. At his age, he’s broken every record in English football, so I’m struggling to understand the pressure he has been under. You have to be someone special to break a record. He should be helped to create even more history.”
