- By Scarlett Howes Sarah Arnold

A BRITISH tourist found dead in Greece yesterday was feared to have been mauled by stray dogs. simply abandoning pets that they can no longer afford to keep.

In May last year, a Rottweiler mauled a Greek boy aged five to death in Kozani.

There were plans for thousands of stray dogs to be poisoned ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, despite a campaign by the RSPCA opposing the cull.

The Greek authorities feared the sight of packs roaming the streets would damage their efforts to use the Games to showcase their country as modern and civilised. The British woman’s body was found near Petrota in the prefecture of Rodopi, close to the border with Turkey.

The area, famed for its ruins, was home to the fourth century BC philosopher Metrocles and is mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey.

The search was carried out by specialist police, the Komotini Fire Brigade, the Mountaineering Club, the Red Cross and the Crime Prevention and Suppression Team of the Greek Police force. There was also help from search and rescue dogs that were brought in from Orestiada, a town in the Evros region.

Nine years ago, a British expat was mauled to death by a pack of wild dogs near her home in a Bulgarian village.

Ann Gordon, 56, originally from Galloway, Scotland, was walking her pet Alsatian in Nedyalsko when she was surrounded by eight strays. The dogs tore her to pieces while fighting off a group of children who tried to intervene.
