Car mix-up triggers fines

-

The 64-year-old woman was targeted during a sightseeing trip to an archeological site in the north-east of the country.

The retired Oxford University professor reportedly phoned relatives in the UK on Thursday as she was attacked. And when her frantic amily were unable to get in touch with her later, they alerted Greek authorities.

The woman’s body was found yesterday morning after a two-day search and taken to Sismanoglio Hospital in Komotini by air ambulance. Her family were thought to be travelling to Greece last night.

A source close to the rescue bid said: “It’s an absolute tragedy. The victim was a regular visitor to Greece because she loved the people and the culture. Everybody involved in the rescue attempt was left deeply shocked by the scene they found when the woman’s body was discovered.”

The Foreign Office said: “We are providing consular assistance to her family.”

The Greek financial crisis has caused a surge in the number of stray dogs in the country. Animal charities say there are now more than a million because people are A MOTORIST racked up £190 in fines for the Dartford Crossing – after putting in the wrong registration number for her own car.

Tina Appleton, 58, was furious when she was hit with the penalty notice after paying the one-way £2.50 congestion charge when she went to see pals in Tilbury, Essex, five months ago.

When she refused to pay the original notice, the penalties increased.

It got to the point where Tina insisted she would rather go to prison than pay up, as she insisted she had registered her payment details online on the Dart Charge site.

It has now emerged that she had incorrectly entered the number plate of her car – meaning her actual registration triggered a fine as it was not on the system. She made the trip from her home in Chatham, Kent, across the bridge to Essex on March 25.

Last night a spokesman acknowledged the issue should have been picked up sooner and said the fine had been scrapped as there had been a “clear, genuine attempt to pay”.
