Kate British My daughter’s a Superwoman who has had loads of marriage offers

- By Janine Yaqoob ACTING TV EDITOR

We never physically fought but things weren’t always harmonious. Nadine Coyle admits it wasn’t all sweetness and light with bandmate Cheryl Tweedy in Girls Aloud. You don’t say! I just got on with it. I certainly don’t know what half of them mean. Dimwit Liam Gallagher admits he didn’t really understand the lyrics his brother Noel wrote for him to sing in Oasis. Though to be fair I’m not sure anyone else did either, Liam. GREAT British Bake Off’s Kate Lyon has been hailed a “superwoman” for reaching the final despite having so much on her plate.

The full-time health and safety inspector, who is also studying for a Master’s degree, goes up against Steven Carter-Bailey and Sophie Faldo in the final of the hit Channel 4 show on Tuesday.

And her proud parents Anna and Barry will be hoping her creations leave judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith hungry for more.

Anna said she is astonished by how Kate, 29, has managed to juggle her work and studies with her stint in the contest.

“No matter what happens there is no denying our girl’s motivation, dedication, can-do attitude and inspirational qualities,” Anna wrote on Facebook. “The only baker working full-time plus with a demanding job, plus doing her master’s and travelling from the North! She is an absolute Superwoman to us.”

Kate’s impressive showstoppers have earned her a legion of fans and a fair few fellas have definitely been sweet on her.

Anna told how her daughter – who, sorry guys, does have a boyfriend – has even been inundated with marriage proposals.

Apparently, some men have even offered to leave their wives for her. “Kate received tons of marriage proposals on Twitter when she mentioned she wasn’t married, some offering to divorce their wives,” said Anna.

Predominantly self- taught, Kate, from Merseyside, only started baking about two years ago, even though she has been watching Bake Off for much longer.

She was encouraged to sign up by a colleague and never thought she would make it this far. “I was a big fan of Bake Off as I love watching cookery programmes,” said Kate.

“I would regularly take my cakes to work and one of my friends, Fran, told me, ‘Look Kate, this is really lovely, if you don’t apply for the show, I will. And I am being serious’.

“So I decided to give it a go. I didn’t think any more of it and now here I am!”

But it has not been easy, as Kate admits she had a lot to grapple with during the first week of filming.

“I haven’t got a mixer at home and the first time I used one was in the Bake Off tent,” she laughs. “I didn’t have a clue how to use the equipment and when I bake at home, I am just in my own chill-out world.”

Kate’s journey to the final three has not been without its bumps. In week two, she narrowly escaped being booted out – but just two weeks later she was Star Baker. She failed to impress in biscuit week with her coconut seashells for a Titanic afternoon tea signature challenge. In bread week, she rose to the occasion with a weird and wonderful Kraken Bread Sculpture. But it was caramel week that she first tasted sweet victory. She said: “I enjoyed caramel week and p a t i s s e r i e week because I hadn’t done much of these things! In fact, I had never made caramel. It was a good chance to develop my baking skills. I love a challenge. I can’t tell you how many pans I ruined though during practice.”

Reliving her best and worst moments, Kate said high praise from Prue will stick in her mind. “Hearing Prue say my cake was the best she had tasted was amazing. What a compliment. I need to print that and frame it.”

She told how her worst moments were when the bakers left each week, saying: “The other bakers became friends so it goes without saying it was the hardest part.”

Kate will be hoping for no soggy bottoms in the final as she tries not to drop any of the cheeky innuendos the show is famous for. She
