GUYS TOP SHOPPERS

- By Stephen Hayward

MEN are outspending women on clothes, shoes and even beauty products, new figures show.

Two thirds of stores have seen more male shoppers since 2012 and 70 per cent have increased their male product ranges to meet demand.

The figures explode the retail myth that women are the big spenders, said the analysis by Barclaycard.

Men shell out an average of £67 a month on clothes compared with £54 by women. They also spend £12 more on shoes and £6 more on grooming products.

Barclaycard said men are buying more in almost every r etail category, f r om electronics to eating out. On average they spent £ 1,534 more than women in the shops last year.

It said fashion retailers are cashing in on male shopaholics because men buy more and take back less, making them more profitable. New Look, Sainsbury’s, Boohoo and Net-a-Porter have increased their male ranges or launched stand-alone male stores or websites.

Chains catering exclusively for men are also thriving. Pretty Green, founded in 2009 by former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, now has 30 stores. Its boss Richard Ralph said sales have doubled in three years.

Barclaycard said the trend may have gone unnoticed because male shoppers like to keep their spending secret by going online, whereas women still prefer the high street.
