£50,168,562 Generous Brits’ record total for Children in Need

- By Amy Sharpe

CARING Brits coughed up an amazing £50.2million during Children In Need – the highest total ever for the night of the show.

Viewers dug deep in the five-hour extravaganza hosted by stars including Graham Norton and Tess Daly.

It was £5million more than last year. And with donations rolling in for weeks it’s on course to smash last year’s record £60million total. The huge sum from Friday’s show will help kids’ charities worldwide. Viewers saw Blue Peter hosts in a Strictly Come Dancing special – Mark Curry beat Konnie Huq and Anthea Turner to the Pudsey Glitterball.

The cast of EastEnders belted out West End hits. And Countryfile presenters performed...country hits.

Holby City star Chizzy Akudolu won £15,000 for charity in a celebrity return of Anne Robinson’s Weakest Link.

But the biggest cheers came when Car Share stars Peter Kay, 44, and Sian Gibson, 41, announced two more episodes of their hit show next year.

Kay had ruled out filming any more of the comedy about colleagues whose romance grows as they share a daily drive to work – despite a cliffhanger ending.

But he said: “We were getting constant abuse. People were very angry that the series ended that way, but there is a season finalé explaining what happened.

“It’s been a very hard secret to keep.”
