SECURITY COMMITTEE TO FOCUS ON 3 AREAS OF MEDDLING RUSSIAN CYBER ATTACKS INQUIRY

- By Amy Sharpe by Keir Mudie DEPUTY POLITICAL EDITOR

PRINCE William is determined to stamp out cyber bullying – inspired by one mother’s heartbreaking tale.

Lucy Alexander’s 17-year-old son tragically took his own life last year after years of being tormented on social media.

In an emotional meeting this week, Wills listened as Lucy and youngster Chloe Hine, whose online bullies drove her to attempt suicide aged 13, reflected on their ordeals.

The prince has teamed up with tech firms, children’s charities and parents to launch a code of conduct urging users to “Stop, Speak, Support” one another online.

Praising Lucy and Chloe for speaking out, the Duke of Cambridge said: “It is one thing in the playground and it’s visible there and parents and teachers and other children can see it.

“Online, you’re the only one who s sees it, and it’s so personal. It goe goes straight to your room.”

Luc Lucy, from Worcester, believes PARLIAMENT’S powerful and secretive Intelligence and Security Committee will probe Russian cyber-attacks on us.

Sources say concerns have reached critical levels and they plan a “short but thorough” investigation into Kremlin interference.

The news follows reports that Moscow influenced the Brexit vote through sites like Facebook and Twitter. The investigation will focus on three key areas of meddling.

One source said: “They are going to look at influences on Brexit and other elections. They’ll also examine attacks on businesses – including media. And they’ll look at attempted hacks on national infrastructure.” The committee’s recommendations will be presented to Theresa May to encourage her to take a tougher stance with Russian leader Vladamir Putin.

Eloise Todd, chief executive of cam- paign group Best for Britain, said: “The Prime Minister has taken far too long to speak out on Russian interference.

“The Government must not leave a stone unturned in finding out what happened in our election and referendum.

“This Government has tried to hoodwink the public for too long but from Brexit impact papers to Russian interference, Best for Britain and our supporters will keep pushing for our right to know the truth. The Government need to stand up to Putin.”

Earlier this week Ciaran Martin, chief executive of GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, accused the Russians of launching attacks on our media, energy and communications sectors over the last 12 months.

And Mrs May used a speech to warn Mr Putin we are prepared to get tough.

It was revealed this week that an army of “bots” – automated accounts programmed to push propaganda on Twitter – shared messages thousands of times a day from Leave. EU, the campaign group fronted by millionaire Brexiteer Arron Banks.
