CORRIE STAR FAYE ON My lesbian scenes are so racy... I hope older viewers are not offended

- By Sue Crawford

A PASSIONATE lesbian love scene was a nerve-racking challenge for Coronation Street star Faye Brookes – especially as she feared upsetting older viewers.

Fans saw her character Kate Connor finally give in to her feelings for best friend Rana Nazir in Friday’s episode.

They ended up in a clinch in their undies after their van broke down in the middle of nowhere.

Despite her fears of controversy, Faye told how she was happy to plough ahead with the scene – for the sake of LGBT people.

Faye, 30, who is dating musicals star Gareth Gates, said: “I’ve never seen anything so racy on Coronation Street as when I watched back what we filmed that day. I’m very loyal to the older viewers, so I don’t want to upset them, but I think we might have.

“I have never done anything like this in my life. I met my boyfriend when I had to kiss him on stage, but even that wasn’t as racy as what I had to do here.”

Daunting

Faye, who has played waitress Kate for two years, admits filming the risqué scenes was daunting.

She said: “It wasn’t easy, but it wouldn’t be easy if it was a man either. It’s someone you are not familiar with in that way.

“You work out how you are going to do it then put the emotion on top of it and make it believable for viewers, especially for the LGBT community. This is a big deal for them.

“I think it makes it harder that I’m a straight woman because everyone knows I’m not gay and it’s t he same f or Bhavna (Limbachia, who plays Rana) but we can’t have any inhibitions, we’ve got to let them go.

“We both wanted to do justice to the storyline so we took our time. We spoke with the director before we stepped on set, had a private meeting and a closed set.”

Throwing off her inhibitions was hard for an actress who describes herself as “the most insecure person”. Faye opened up about her body image and the pressure she puts on herself to look good.

She said: “My mum brought me up to love myself but I’m the most insecure person you’ll probably ever meet. It’s stupid and it’s all in my head but actresses tend to pull ourselves apart. We pick up on our flaws and point them out and we shouldn’t really because everybody is going to be different.

“I don’t eat carbs or chips and I try to eat veg, fish and fruit rather than sugar. It was my nephew’s 16th birthday recently and my sister had made an amazing cake. All I did was lick the icing.

“Afterwards I was like, ‘Oh God, now I have to do a workout for three hours tomorrow.’ Isn’t that crazy? Mum was sitting next xt to me and said, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘Yes fine, just ignore me, I’m just being a weirdo.’ ”

Passion exploded on screen een when Kate went with Rana, who is married to chef Zeedan, to oa a food fair.

When their van broke down wn they had an intense heart-totoheart before finally giving in to their feelings.

They were only interrupted ed when Luke Britton, played by Dean Fagan, arrived to rescue cue them. He opened the van doors ors to find them both in a state of undress.

Faye joked: “Two girls in na a broken-down van in the middle dle of nowhere. It’s freezing cold and they needed to keep each other her warm. The fact that Rana laid her soul bare made Kate see her
