THE WELCOME The autumnal leaves followed us through the front door from the cold outside into the lovely warmth of a proper rural pub. Inside the 300-year-old free house, the high wooden bar, low beams and rustic decor transport you to a much-needed world away from gizmos and gadgets. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD The Welldiggers Arms stands on its own, surrounded by rolling fields and thick woods. Petworth is a half-hour walk or fiveminute drive, with a fascinating collection of antique shops and boutiques. THE ROOM Rooms are available above the pub or in an annexe. We had a luxury kingsize room with a freestanding brass bath. The bed was comfy and the views across the landscape were stunning. THE FOOD Locally sourced and expertly cooked, the portions at the Welldiggers are not skimpy. The monkfish cheek scampi is phenomenal. So good we had it twice. The steaks are melt-in-the-mouth, complete with the secret Welldiggers butter, and the fish is delicious. All are cooked in an open kitchen so you can see the chefs at work. Breakfast is continental, cooked or an omelette. THE SERVICE The staff and the manager could not be more friendly or helpful. They’ll help you prop up the bar for a few hours to chew the fat and then make sure everything from your dinner to your room is faultless. THE SCENE Picturesque countryside that is perfect for walking in, even for amateurs like us. A sixmile round walk recommended by the pub helps build up a thirst and hunger for dinner. LOVED The cosy feel and the views. HATED The wi-fi wasn’t strong enough to stream when we collapsed after a day of walking. HOLIDAYMAKERS with leave still to take over the festive period are being warned not to fly on Christmas Day – it is the most pricey. Research by Skyscanner says it costs 12 per cent more than any other day from December 16 to 31. Cheapest is December 30, saving 27 per cent on average festive flight prices. It found December 23 is cheapest, while the 17th will be the quietest. STUMPED for what to give a loved one? A Christmas present doesn’t have to be an object. Lots of agencies offer model and photoshoot sessions, where th the subject gets the services of a make-up artist and hairstylist and then has their photograph taken in a p professional studio.
