IT’S A BIT TU SOON

-

The winger crossed twice in the second half, both tries he had no right to score as Chiefs demolished the French league leaders and notched up their biggest win at Europe’s top table.

If they had lost they would have been out on their ears but Woodburn voted to remain with his brace of stunners.

This gives Exeter a crack at the quarter- finals and they head to Glasgow next week knowing a bonus point win should do it.

Woodburn has been on fire this season, scoring eight tries but never featuring in Eddie Jones’ squads.

And the 26-year-old was told not to get his hopes up when the England supremo names his Six Nations squad on Thursday. Exeter boss Rob Baxter said: “England squads mature, change and develop and you have to be the player at the front end of your game when things change. England are getting results.

“It is not like we are a team who are performing and England are a team that are not performing.

“To break in you have got to be exceptionally consistent and our guys are starting to show that. One of them was an incredible finish. What he needs to do is be good for us and, if he is very good for us, he keeps his name out there which helps his case for future England inclusion.

“All you can do in these big games is go and put yourself out there.”

Exeter played the first half into a howling wind but still led 7-0 at the break thanks to a short-range effort from flanker Dave Ewers.

They kept their heads and Montpellier pegged back in their own half before cutting loose in the second period when the French side hardly got a touch.

Sam Simmonds, who is on Jones’ radar, piled over for the second score on 55 minutes, then the Woodburn show started.

For his first he jumped over two defenders to get the ball down, and on 64 minutes he produced a worldie by making mugs of Montpellier full- back Henry Immelman and replacement Joe Tomane. That score gave Chiefs the bonus point and further scores from scrum-half Nic White and flanker Don Armand rubbed salt in it.

Armand is another who can’t get on the right side of Jones but Baxter reckons his time and Woodburn’s will come.

He added: “They have many caps ahead of them. These guys play really well for us and put themselves in the shop window. They have

got to hang in there.”
