- By Tom Hopkinson

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN might be Tottenham’s great Dane but he’s not the only Spurs star adding a bit of Nordic nous to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

That’s because Ben Davies’ football education benefited from a two-year spell in Viborg as a kid after his father was posted to the city, three hours drive north-west of Copenhagen, on a work placement.

Davies loved every minute of it and so impressed was the Welshman with the way things are run in that particular part of Scandinavia that he believes grassroots football in the UK ought to take note.

He said: “Every winter, from November to the end of January, we used to play indoor football on handball courts.

“It was kind of like futsal and was j just the common thing to do. “I w was the keeperswe sweeper. They don’t ha have goalkeepers a as you can’t use y your hands, it w was all passa and-move.

“It was all abo about technique, it makes you learn a lot at that age and it’s not a bad way to go.

“In the winter in Wales, playing on grass pitches, you can’t pass the ball and 50 per cent of the games are called off because of the weather.

“But we had a good little team – we won the Danish championships at Under-10s.

“Indoor football is huge there and it would be brilliant to have it here.”

Tottenham are visiting Southampton today and Davies is hoping to put in the sort of performance that catches the eye of the new Wales manager Ryan Giggs (inset).

The Spurs defender added: “Growing up, Ryan Giggs was

Welsh footballer, especially in my era.

“Getting the chance to work under him should be fun and definitely something I am looking forward to.

“Being around Giggs and his staff will be a great opportunity to learn from his experience.”
