Wolves are Price sensitive

- By Gareth Walker

WARRINGTON’S new boss Steve Price will not allow his squad to dwell on their disastrous 2017 campaign.

The Wolves were tipped by some pundits to win the treble last year, but instead had to fight for their Super League status in the Qualifiers, after failing to make the top eight.

That ended coach Tony Smith’s eight-year stint with the club, but incoming Australian Price said: “I wasn’t here last year and I can’t control what happened.

“We’ve brought new players in, new coaching staff and what we can control is the present.

“It’s all about new beginnings now and it’s an exciting time.

“From day one of coming together we’ve only spoken about the present, we haven’t discussed what happened in the past.

“The actions that we do on the training field will give us the outcome that we’re hoping to achieve at the back end of the year.”

Price consulted former Super League coaches Nathan Brown and Michael Maguire, plus England boss Wayne Bennett, before penning a two-year deal with the Wolves.

Former St George Illawarra Dragons coach Price landed in this country at the start of November – five months ahead of his family – and is now relishing Thursday night’s season opener against Leeds.

Price added: “There’s no better team to kick-off against than the current champions.

“There’s no pressure on us against them.

“They will certainly be favourites and we just want to grow as a team.

“I’ve really liked what I’ve seen of the club and the town so far.

“The people of Warrington are very passionate people and they want to see their footy team do well.

“I’m pumped to get rocking on Thursday.”
