RUGBY LEAGUE WINGERS FACE-OFF AFTER CALL TO JOIN THE ELITE Kid Lucas’ KO for KR

- By Trevor Baxter

TOM DAVIES and Tom Johnstone are on the fast track to international stardom.

The wingers will face off in an intriguing sub plot to this afternoon’s Super League clash of high- fliers Wigan and Wakefield.

Dynamite Davies, 21, has four tries in five appearances including two in Warriors’ Australian showdown against South Sydney. That strike rate brought a call from England Knights boss, Paul Anderson, while Johnstone finds himself in coach Wayne Bennett’s elite performance squad.

Wakefield’s hot prospect marked his first Super League appearance for nine months following a knee surgery with a hattrick against Hull KR and has since added another try to his tally.

“I’m looking forward to it,” says Davies ( above) of his challenge against his 22-year-old rival and justifying coach Shaun Wane’s faith to hand him Wigan’s No.2 jersey.

“We’re both young players in the same position but you look forward to those challenges, I’m just going to do my best to try and get one up on him.” On his call- up Davies added: “Paul Anderson called my mum and dad’s number as that was the only one they had for me. “He told me I’d been selected and I instantly thought it was one of the lads messing about. It took him a few minutes to convince me it was actually him,” added Davies who hasn’t previously played for his country at any level. Johnstone is also an England newcomer. He had been pushing for England’s World Cup squad last year until injury wrecked his season last April. Gabe Hamlin could make his Super League debut for Wigan after signing from South Sydney but Joel Tomkins’ swollen knee rules him out. Wakefield hope to field Aussie hooker Tyler Randall for the first time since a knee injury on Boxing Day. LUCAS ALBERT eased the pressure on coach Steve McNamara by booting Catalans Dragons to a first Super League victory of the season.

Rovers twice came from six points down to level at 16-all with 10 minutes remaining of a low grade game in Perpignan.

But teenager Albert kicked a 70th-minute penalty – his fourth goal of the night – to end the French side’s run of four successive defeats.

Wingers Lewis Tierney and Fouad Yaha also touched down for the home side who remain bottom.

Rovers’ defeat leaves them in the bottom four with the Dragons on two points.
